In 2004, the Community Research Advisory Board was developed by the UNC Center for Community Research (CCR) Community Outreach Specialists. Through their interactions and relationship-building with community-based organizations and individuals within the regions, the Outreach Specialists were able to identify key stakeholders to serve on the advisory board. The individuals that serve on the advisory board are committed to improving the health of all citizens and reducing racial/ethnic health disparities. Members serve a two-year term after which new community members are recommended by the advisory board to serve. The purpose of the Community Research Advisory Board is to advise the CCR and ECHO on the development and implementation of community-based research addressing disparities in health status and health outcomes among underserved populations within the CCR's regions. All research projects conducted in collaboration with the CCR's are reviewed by members of the community to ensure that projects will be mutually beneficial to communities affected by pressing health issues.
